Rod Colon came to speak to our class on September 10th 2019. I thought Rod did an excellent job of captivating the audience with his enthusiasm and energy. His infectious smile and up beat disposition was a treat for our entire class. He got all of us involved by asking us questions. He tried to personalize the speech by taking individual members of the classroom and putting them in situations where they have to be their own CEO.

Rod Colon entire speech was oriented around the idea of being the boss of your own brand. By this Rod means that we need to be in charge of ourselves and what value we can bring to business in our field. We need to be constantly trying to further ourselves in our fields by taking accountability for what we do. We must put ourselves first and ask what can we do to better or position.

Rod told a great story where he approached an executive and the company that he worked for. He was just an intern at the time. Even though Rod was just an intern he went up to the executive and asked him if he would like a coffee? A very simple gesture right? Well this simple gesture took the executive by such surprise that it left a great impression for Rod. A couple of weeks later Rod was called into a big executive at the company's office. This big executive told Rod that he was so impressed that he would have the decency and the courage to go up to an executive as an intern that he gave him a job.

Simple acts of kindness like this can go a long way in the business world. It is all about making connections and Rod is a master connector. He talked about how important it is to know exactly what you can offer a company otherwise they will have no idea what you do. In order to do that you must communicate your strengths to whoever you are talking to in the company. Making that connection is so important in establishing yourself within a company.

How do you make those connections, well that is Rod's specialty. He advises that you need to be fearless and ask questions and tell them about yourself without fear of rejection. It is about the effort in trying to get yourself out there that will impress potential employers. He even spoke about elevator pitches and how it is important to portray yourself in a non professional setting. There are always opportunities to improve your stock you just need to capitalize on those opportunities. Those opportunities can be as simple as approaching an executive at a lunch and asking him if he would like some coffee. Not only get coffee, but also get the exact breakfast that he likes including a blueberry muffin. It is those extra details and going the extra mile that got Rod the job.

Overall I thought Rod did an excellent job and I am glad I was able to witness him in person.
